Time always slips away unnoticed, and soon 2023 will be in the past as we step into 2024. Throughout this year, Fazzaco has been closely following the developments in the crypto and digital asset industry. Together, we've witnessed numerous significant events: the ongoing saga of the FTX incident, the impact of Generative AI, the initiation of crypto industry regulations in regions like Hong Kong, the frequent rebranding of Huobi (HTX), and the regulatory hurdles faced by Binance.

Now, let's take a moment to review and remember the major events that shaped the crypto industry this year.

The 2023 Stories of Crypto Exchanges

FTX's collapse shook the world in 2022, while this year's major exchange crisis occurred in the latter half with Binance. In November, Binance announced resolutions with various regulatory bodies, including the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), regarding accusations against its CEO, Changpeng "CZ" Zhao, which included money laundering, bank fraud, and sanctions violations. Following his admission of guilt, CZ announced his resignation as CEO the next day.

For long, CZ had been somewhat of a spokesperson within the crypto community. However, after his admission of guilt, he faces trial in the first half of 2024. This event regarding Binance essentially eliminated a systemic risk for the entire industry, and that is giants like Binance would not go belly up.

However, amid the tug-of-war between regulators and exchanges, we also witnessed victories for the exchanges. In July, Ripple won its case against the US SEC. This legal battle began in 2020 when the SEC noticed Ripple's rapid rise in the industry and accused it of selling over 14.6 billion units of "unregistered securities" XRP in exchange for assets worth $1.38 billion. While Ripple faced a series of setbacks in subsequent lawsuits, the Southern District Court of New York ruled in July that using XRP for investments, self-distribution, and transfers to others should not be considered as illegally selling unregistered securities. This ruling significantly boosted the crypto industry, as the intention of US regulators to classify cryptocurrencies as securities has been a longstanding regulatory concern within the crypto community. Yet, in this ruling, XRP was conditionally deemed a non-security, holding considerable positive significance.

Hong Kong's VASP License: Thunderous Start, Meager Outcome

According to Fazzaco's article The Race for Hong Kong VASP License Begins, Which Exchanges Will Make the Cut?: as of June 1, 2023, the Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong (SFC) has launched a new licensing regime for virtual asset service providers, under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing Ordinance.

However, what happened next proved this to be a storm in a teacup. Despite initial enthusiasm, Hong Kong's Web3 development fell significantly short, with funding channels from Mainland China becoming increasingly unsustainable, thereby undermining Hong Kong's competitiveness in the global digital asset market. Making matters worse, crises involving institutions like JPEX and Hounax by year-end, especially JPEX's collapse, escalated rapidly. In September 2023, the SFC issued its first statement of suspicion against the JPEX platform, following which some users reported unsuccessful fund withdrawals. Hong Kong authorities swiftly initiated "Operation Iron Curtain," arresting multiple suspects. By October 5, 2023, the number of implicated individuals stood at 27, with 2,523 reported cases, involving approximately HKD 1.55 billion, marking it as one of Hong Kong's largest financial fraud cases. All these events highlighted the relatively low local education and awareness within the Hong Kong crypto sphere.

Ethereum's Shanghai Upgrade and Controversies

In April, Ethereum successfully completed the "Shanghai Upgrade." This upgrade allowed users to withdraw staked Ether. Data revealed that within about ten days post-upgrade, users collectively withdrew approximately $25 billion worth of ETH. However, contrary to expectations, the anticipated frenzy of ETH sell-offs didn't materialize. Apart from the initial surge in withdrawals on the upgrade day, the market's withdrawal frenzy gradually cooled down, demonstrating Ethereum's price resilience. Nevertheless, many in the crypto community felt that while Ethereum's price continued to rise, it didn't spike as significantly as BTC. Even Solana outperformed Ethereum this year with a breakout price surge.

As per the current roadmap, Ethereum's next upgrade, the "Cancun Upgrade," is slated for between March and April next year. This upgrade is anticipated to significantly increase the Ethereum network's transaction throughput, heralding a new phase in Ethereum's data storage and retrieval capabilities.

Bitcoin's Meteoric Rise: A Rebirth for the Withered?

Throughout 2023, Bitcoin's price surged from a low of $16,000 in January to $43,000 at year-end, marking a 160% increase for the year, though still below its 2021 historic peak of nearly $70,000. Additionally, Bitcoin will undergo its fourth halving in 2024, reducing the block reward to 3.125 BTC per block. Post-2028, another halving will further reduce Bitcoin's supply, steadily pushing its price higher.

Moreover, Bitcoin spot ETFs were a hot topic in the crypto sphere this year. In June, BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, announced its entry, instantly heating up the ETH market.

Conclusion

2023 was a year of transformation and challenges for the crypto space. Regulatory turmoil, exchange tumult, technological advancements, and various market shifts combined to create a multifaceted panorama of industry development. Looking ahead, we ponder: How will the trend of regulations impact crypto's development? What changes will technological advancements bring to the industry? And what emerging projects are worth our attention and anticipation? Reflecting on this year is a means to better envision the future.
