Prop trading firms have been making waves on social media last week, sparking intriguing discussions among market participants. Fazzaco, too, has covered stories that highlighted some bumps in the road for prop firms. Names like FTMO and The5ers have hit pause on their services, joining others like Funding Pips, True Forex Funds, and Eightcap in facing hurdles.

Prop Firms, A Curveball Thrown At Regulatory Norms

Prop trading firms primarily operate without too much regulations (go to Fazzaco's exclusive Q&A: "Voices from the Industry: Is the Rise of Prop Trading A Disruption or Opportunity?" to learn more), and that in fact poses a counterpoint to MetaQuotes, the brains behind MetaTrader platforms, as they navigate the fine line between fostering innovation and adhering to regulations.

So as they get increasing stricter on who uses MT4 and MT5, and how much to get a license, prop firms popped out with direct or indirect access to white label, which is something that MetaQuotes hates to the gut.

Anya Aratovskaya, a B2B analyst, paint a picture of the prop trading scene in her LinkedIn post, that shows us how dramatic this community is. Out of a list of 122 firms, 80% of which have partnered with brokers like Eightcap, Purple, Blueberry Markets, and ThinkMarkets. But here's the dramatic kicker: only 10% of these are buddy-buddy with fully licensed retail FX brokers, showcasing the wild, wild west nature of this space.

Migrate or Not? That Is A Question

Fazzaco covered the announcement of Smart Prop Trader a few days earlier. The prop firm announced its intent to migrate to multiple new platforms, including cTrader, on X.com. Contrary to what Smart Prop Trader did, many prop firms are sticking to their old-school guns and cozying up to MT4/MT5 rather than hopping on the cTrader and DXTrade bandwagon. It seems like they're saying, "If it ain't broke, why fix it?"

Meanwhile, MetaQuotes is throwing some shade at providers who are letting prop firms onboard US clients and dabble in 'grey label' programs. So that explains why they are halting services, because they're playing it safe, which makes sense considering the regulatory hoops they have to jump through.

Thoughts

Despite the challenges, prop trading remains an exciting playground for investors. Legal eagles have noticed a spike in requests for licensed shell companies, hinting at a bustling market full of opportunities. But while MetaQuotes is keeping a watchful eye, they seem to prefer playing the long game rather than duking it out with prop trading firms one by one.
