Kyriakos Hadjikyriakou, HTFX EU Executive Director, Expands on Whether A Broker Should Go Props?

Often, when we talk about the rise of proprietary trading and firms that offer trader funding programs, it seems like a significant challenge for retail brokers in the markets. Indeed, there is competition between prop firms and brokers going on to an extent. There is, however, a considerable overlap between the two, whether in terms of the types of assets traded or the demographics of traders involved.

In Fazzaco's Exclusive Prop Trading Forum last December, guests invited shared their views on the "Prop Trading Firms vs. Brokers" topic. Almost all pointed out the issue of regulatory absence in the prop trading community, and just one month after that, the US regulator's pressure on MetaQuotes to cancel a large number of prop firms' grey labels undoubtedly confirmed their concern.

But in recent months, Fazzaco has noticed that the markets have shown that brokers and prop firms are not necessarily incompatible. In April 2024, we reported on leading forex broker IC Markets venturing into prop trading. In May, ThinkMarkets announced the launch of its trader funding project.

From a broker's perspective, prop trading services are a hot product. Offering it does not require additional regulatory efforts and expands their offerings and hence bigger clientele. Moreover, brokers already have licenses and access to platforms like MT4 and MT5, so why not?

Conversely, many ambitious prop firms are also expanding back into brokerage. As mentioned in Fazzaco's article "FTMO Branches Out into Brokerage, Another Way Out for Fellow Prop Firms," industry giant FTMO hired the former CEO of retail forex broker Skilling to plan its brokerage business expansion.

The prop trading industry is ever-changing. Therefore, Fazzaco has once again invited executives from three leading companies representing three different fields to provide us with a fresh view on the prop trading industry from their unique standpoints.

Today, we are fortunate to have Mr. Kyriakos Hadjikyriakou, Executive Director of leading broker HTFX EU company, join us again at Fazzaco for an exclusive interview. With over a decade of experience in the financial industry, he will analyze from a broker's perspective the layered relationship between brokers and prop firms under the new regulatory landscape of 2024.

Learn More: Fazzaco Talks to Executive Director of HTFX EU: Changing The Way You Trade Is More Than A Slogan

Hello Kyriakos, it's great to have you back with us here in Fazzaco. Since 2021, regulatory thresholds for retail forex brokers have gradually increased. We all know that online trading markets have developed rapidly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to the rise of prop trading. How do you view this phenomenon against such a backdrop? And how should brokers respond to the consequent competition?

The rise of proprietary trading firms is a significant development in the financial markets. These firms, leveraging their own capital and sophisticated trading strategies, are driving innovation and attracting top trading talent. This trend reflects a shift in investo preferences towards more dynamic and potentially high-yield trading environments.

At HTFX, we view this rise as a natural evolution of the market. While it introduces a new layer of competition, it also challenges us to elevate our services. We respond by continually enhancing our technological capabilities, offering advanced trading tools, and maintaining a robust support system for our clients. Our focus remains on providing a secure, transparent, and efficient trading platform that meets the diverse needs of our investors.

Here's what we've observed recently, companies like IC Markets, Think Markets, and Yamarkets (YaTrader) are all developing their own prop trading sectors. Does HTFX have similar plans?

While the concept of developing a prop trading firm like YaTrader is compelling, our primary focus at HTFX is on fortifying our core brokerage services. We believe there is still substantial growth potential in delivering superior trading platforms and exceptional customer support. However, we are always open to exploring new opportunities. If market conditions and strategic alignment make it feasible, we may consider venturing into the prop trading space in the future. For now, our strategy is to consolidate our strengths and expand our service offerings within our existing framework.

With your impressive decade achievements in finance, do you think it's a wise choice for entrepreneurs to start a prop firm rather than a brokerage?

The decision to start a prop trading firm versus a brokerage business hinges on several factors, including the entrepreneur's expertise, risk tolerance, and business objectives. Prop trading firms offer the allure of higher returns, as they trade using their own capital. This can be highly rewarding but also entails substantial risk and requires a deep understanding of market dynamics and risk management.

On the other hand, a brokerage business, while typically offering lower profit margins, provides a more stable revenue stream through commissions and fees. It also involves navigating regulatory requirements and building a broad client base, which can be a more predictable and sustainable business model.

For entrepreneurs with a strong background in trading and a high-risk tolerance, starting a prop firm could be an exciting and lucrative venture. Conversely, those who prefer stability and have strong customer relationship skills might find starting a brokerage business to be a more suitable path. Ultimately, the choice should align with the entrepreneur's strengths, market insights, and long-term goals.

Thanks to the deep multi-asset liquidity products provided by a vast network of bulk brokers, ECNs, and exchanges, HTFX tailors accounts for clients offering highly competitive trading costs and gradually becoming one of the global leaders in forex. Therefore, their perspective as brokers provides valuable insights into the prop trading industry.

On the other hand, since we're discussing whether entrepreneurs should choose to start a brokerage or prop firm, I figured that we should also hear from those who provide solutions to brokers. Next up, we'll have Mr. Muthukumaran Ramachandran, Chief Product Officer at turnkey broker solution provider FYNXT, to share his insights on how solutions for brokers and prop firms differ.
