Pavel Durov, the billionaire founder and CEO of the encrypted messaging platform Telegram, was detained by French authorities on Saturday evening at Le Bourget Airport near Paris. The arrest occurred after Durov's private jet arrived from Azerbaijan. The reasons for the arrest remain unclear but are reportedly linked to the activities of Telegram.

Durov, 39, co-founded Telegram in 2013, emphasizing end-to-end encryption. Despite its popularity among approximately 900 million users, Telegram has faced criticism for its association with scams and fraud, leading to significant financial losses among users. Durov was previously compelled to leave Russia in 2014 due to his refusal to comply with government demands to shut down opposition groups on the platform.

The arrest of Durov has also impacted the cryptocurrency market. Toncoin (TON), a cryptocurrency initially linked to Telegram's now-defunct blockchain project, saw a sharp decline of 16% on Sunday, dropping to approximately $5.67 from a previous range of $6.75-6.80. While TON is no longer directly associated with Telegram, the platform's ongoing use of the blockchain and its substantial market cap have kept the two linked in the public's mind.

Telegram has been criticized for its minimal moderation compared to other social media platforms, facing allegations of enabling illegal activities such as drug trafficking, child pornography, terrorism, and fraud. Durov and his company are accused of not cooperating with authorities to curb these activities.

Durov, who now resides in Dubai and holds dual citizenship in the United Arab Emirates and France, has a net worth estimated at $15.5 billion.
