FTX Plans Initial Fund Distributions in 2025 After Bankruptcy
FTX, the cryptocurrency exchange that filed for bankruptcy over two years ago, has announced plans to start distributing funds to claimants as early as January 2025. The company's reorganization plan will take effect on January 3, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the recovery process for affected users. According to FTX, the first group of claim holders can expect repayments within 60 days of this date, pending certain conditions.
The distribution process will be facilitated by crypto firms Kraken and BitGo, which have been selected to assist in the recovery efforts. FTX has indicated that additional announcements regarding other customer classes awaiting repayments will follow. FTX CEO John J. Ray III stated that the organization is prepared to execute these distributions effectively, urging customers to complete the necessary steps to receive their funds promptly.
The court-approved reorganization plan allows for the repayment of approximately 98% of users, with those in"convenience classes"— specifically users claiming $50,000 or less — expected to be among the first to receive funds. This initial distribution will be limited to these convenience classes, while separate timelines for other claim types will be confirmed later.
Since the bankruptcy filing in November 2022, which followed a liquidity crisis and the resignation of then-CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, FTX has been engaged in legal battles to recover funds, including those tied to political contributions made prior to its collapse. The ongoing legal disputes involve attempts to reclaim assets from various crypto firms.
FTX has made it clear that those eligible for the initial distribution must complete identity verification and other requirements through the FTX Debtors' customer portal to facilitate the payouts. This includes onboarding with Kraken or BitGo, as well as submitting necessary tax forms.
As a reminder, customers should be vigilant against phishing attempts that may impersonate FTX communications. The company's legal and financial advisors continue to work on the recovery efforts, which they describe as a culmination of two years of meticulous planning and execution. Further details will be shared as the distribution date approaches, keeping affected users informed throughout the process.
