James Greig Joins FMA Executive Committee
New Zealand Financial Markets Authority(FMA) today announced the appointment of James Greig, currently Director of Supervision, to its Executive Committee. The latest appointment comes as the new regulatory regime for financial advice took effect this week.
In addition, Michael Hewes has been appointed as Head of Financial Advice, within the Supervision team and will lead this work, reporting directly to James Greig.
Mr Greig worked in the banking and finance industry in New Zealand and Australia for over 20 years in many different roles and sectors. In his new role, Mr Greig will be responsible for monitoring financial advice. He has directly reported to Rob Everett, FMA Chief Executive who would leave the organisation towards the end of the year, since 2020.
Since joining the FMA in 2016, Mr Greig has led the FMA’s Supervision team, which is responsible for monitoring and supervision of managed investment schemes (MIS), supervisors, custodians, derivatives issuers and financial advice.
Before arriving at FMA, Mr Greig left ASB Bank after over 11 years. Over the course of his career, Mr Greig also worked at Westpac, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, ANZ and so on.
Rob Everett commented: “James is already making a great contribution to the FMA’s leadership as we ready ourselves for a significant expansion in our remit. In particular, we are now implementing the new regime for financial advice which came into force earlier this week. In other areas, James has proven himself an effective leader and played a major role both in our response to the COVID-19 pandemic and in the Culture & Conduct reviews into banking and life insurance in 2018.”
