November has arrived, but the employment situation in the global financial industry is still grim. A number of banks, brokers and fintech companies have recently once again taken measures to reduce their costs, with layoffs still being their main approaches.

Last weekend, National Bank of Canada (National Bank), the country's sixth-largest bank, has announced that it is cutting several jobs in its capital markets business, The specifics of the job cuts, such as the number of positions eliminated, have not been disclosed. Macquarie, an Australian global financial services group, is also conducting "unexpected serial layoffs" at its banking and financial services arm this week, creating unease about the breadth of the job cuts.

Additionally, Deutsche Bank will close about 250 of 550 Postbank branches over the next three years as it works to turn the unit into a "mobile-first" provider.

As for brokerage industry, electronic trading major IG Group announced it is beginning measures to simplify and streamline the business. The Group expects to reduce headcount by approximately 300, which represents around 10% of the total workforce at the end of FY23.

In addition, Thought Machine, a cloud-native core banking vendor, is laying off around eight per cent of its workforce, cutting around 50 positions, mostly in sales and marketing.

Given the state of the broader economy, the current employment environment is far from ideal. However, Fazzaco finds there are multiple financial firms, brokerages, fintech and crypto firms in particular, are strengthening their tech, customer services or other teams with new hires.
