Airwallex has acquired OpenPay, a San Francisco-based platform that provides billing, subscription management, and revenue analytics. The financial technology firm said the move will strengthen its global payments offering and allow its customers to automate revenue growth.

Airwallex co-founder and CEO Jack Zhang positioned the deal as a response to the shortcomings of existing billing systems. "Most billing systems are locked in the past, they were never designed for a global, multi-currency world. That's the gap we're closing," he said. By incorporating OpenPay's technology, Zhang argued, Airwallex will deliver "the first truly global billing platform."

OpenPay, founded to simplify recurring revenue management, has developed automated tools including smart payment routing, AI-based customer retention, and real-time revenue insights. Its subscription management capabilities cover tiered, usage-based, and flat-fee pricing models. Such features have gained traction in industries like artificial intelligence, where businesses increasingly monetize by tokens, compute usage, or API calls.

CEO Lance Co Ting Keh of OpenPay described the acquisition as an opportunity to scale its vision. "We started OpenPay to solve the complexity of recurring revenue management. We envisioned a smarter, more intuitive platform that empowers subscription businesses to scale without barriers," he said. "In Airwallex, we found a partner who shares our vision, our DNA, and has the global reach to apply our work at scale."

Demand for flexible billing models has grown in line with the rise of hybrid and usage-based pricing. Airwallex said that integrating OpenPay's capabilities will allow it to offer these options seamlessly across different currencies and jurisdictions.

Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.
