American Express Expands Digital Payment Reach in China Through Alipay Integration

The move enables American Express cardholders worldwide to link their cards to the Alipay wallet, allowing them to make payments at millions of merchants across mainland China.

The initiative marks a milestone in the collaboration between international payment networks and China’s dominant digital payment platforms. The announcement, initially reported by Reuters, highlights American Express’ continued efforts to strengthen its foothold in China’s highly regulated financial sector. By integrating with Alipay, a subsidiary of Ant Group and a key player in China’s mobile payment market, American Express gains greater access to the country’s consumer and retail ecosystem.

For foreign travelers, the integration simplifies transactions, reducing the need for currency exchange or cash payments. Users can bind their American Express cards to Alipay’s digital wallet and make purchases directly via QR codes—China’s preferred method of payment. However, American Express cards issued outside China by partner institutions remain ineligible for this service.

American Express has been steadily expanding its presence in China. In 2020, it became the first foreign card network to receive a bank card clearing license through a joint venture with China UnionPay. The company has since partnered with over 30 banks, mobile payment platforms, and financial institutions to increase its acceptance in the country.

This latest development also reflects a broader trend of China opening its digital payment infrastructure to international players. Alipay, along with its competitor WeChat Pay, has been gradually incorporating global payment networks, offering travelers from various regions the ability to use their home-country credit cards within China. The Alipay platform currently supports multiple major international card networks, providing a more inclusive digital payment environment for visitors.

With China witnessing a resurgence in inbound tourism, the American Express-Alipay partnership is expected to enhance the payment experience for international travelers while further integrating foreign financial services into China’s evolving digital economy.
