2023 is behind us. During the past year, over 721,677 job cuts were conducted by global companies, a surge of 98% over 2022, as per a new report from professional outplacement firm Challenger, Gray, and Christmas. The tech industry in particular saw more than 240,000 roles cut.

Moreover, the outlook for 2024 remains uncertain. Employers and employees alike are worrying over continued layoffs in the new year, due to fears of recession and the impact bought by the development of artificial intelligence (AI).

Just at the beginning of 2024, tech giant Google is planning a massive restructuring, which may impact 30,000 employees.

There is, however, a good omen. Last week, the number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits fell to a two-month low, indicating underlying labor market strength even as demand for workers is easing.
