Atom Bank Opens New Newcastle Headquarters to Support Growth and Innovation

Atom Bank has officially opened its new headquarters at the Pattern Shop in Newcastle, marking the completion of its relocation from Durham. The move represents a significant investment in the North East and will create nearly 30 new roles across the organization. The digital-only bank now employs around 600 people in the region, reinforcing its long-term commitment to local development.
The Pattern Shop, a Grade II-listed building with deep industrial roots, was once home to Robert Stephenson & Co., a landmark of Britain's engineering history. Atom's new multi-million-pound headquarters transforms the historic space into a low-carbon, tech-enabled workplace designed for flexibility and innovation.
Chief Executive Officer Mark Mullen described the move as much more than a logistical shift. "Our move to the Pattern Shop isn't just a change of address; it's a bold statement about our future and our belief in the North East," he said. Mullen emphasized that the relocation aligns with Atom's mission to combine innovation in banking with sustainable business growth.
The new office supports Atom's hybrid working model and its well-known four-day working week - a policy that has attracted attention across the UK for its productivity and employee wellbeing outcomes.
As part of its ongoing growth plan, Atom is recruiting new talent across engineering, data, and customer support. The company continues to invest in future talent through programs such as the Atom Futures Fund, its Early Careers Programme, and educational partnerships with Durham University.
The move has drawn praise from local authorities. Newcastle City Council Leader Karen Kilgour described the bank's decision as "hundreds of well-paying jobs being brought into the heart of our city," commending Atom for its role in supporting innovation and employment in the region.
