BBVA Quadruples OpenAI ChatGPT Enterprise Licenses

BBVA has expanded its partnership with technology giant OpenAI, increasing its number of ChatGPT Enterprise licenses from 3,300 to 11,000. This move is part of the bank's broader strategy to extend generative AI capabilities across its entire organization.
Employees at BBVA reportedly find that automating routine tasks with the AI tool saves them an average of nearly three hours of work per week, allowing them to dedicate more time to strategic tasks. More than 80% of licensed users are reported to use the tool daily. BBVA supports this integration by offering training, fostering a community for sharing best practices, and encouraging internal innovation through idea 'hackathons'.
The initial partnership between BBVA and OpenAI was established in May 2024, when the bank provided 3,300 ChatGPT Enterprise licenses - the business version of ChatGPT, which offers high levels of security and privacy - to its employees. The purpose was to explore the AI's potential to accelerate processes and stimulate internal innovation. Just one year later, in May 2025, the Group has nearly quadrupled its agreement to 11,000 licenses, having assessed the positive impact of this generative AI on team productivity.
Beyond mainstreaming the licenses, BBVA offers training programs to ensure employees utilize the tool in accordance with data security and confidentiality standards. Concurrently, the bank has established a practice community featuring regular meet-ups and online forums, where employees can share updates, lessons learned, and access to assistants and tools that could benefit other departments. A large internal library, known as the ‘GPT Store,' helps users locate the 1,000 assistants deemed relevant for the entire organization, which are accessible to all users.
BBVA is also actively encouraging its teams to develop innovative applications for ChatGPT. In early 2025, the bank organized its first internal BBVA Bot Talent hackathon in Mexico, which received over 170 ideas. The three winning projects, slated for development and rollout across the Group, propose solutions for optimizing and personalizing commercial customer service, accelerating the loan and credit underwriting process for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and identifying fraud attempts via email or SMS through automated message analysis.
