Binance Engages BBVA as Independent Custodian Amid Evolving Crypto Custody Landscape

According to people familiar with the matter, BBVA will hold client funds — specifically in US Treasuries — which Binance will accept as margin for transactions on its platform.

This development adds BBVA to a short list of independent custodians serving Binance clients, alongside institutions such as Switzerland’s Sygnum and FlowBank. The arrangement comes as digital asset exchanges adjust operational structures following market disruptions, including the collapse of FTX in late 2022, which left client funds entangled in bankruptcy proceedings.

The collaboration reflects a shift in custody strategies within the crypto industry. Binance previously required clients to keep assets on-platform or through Ceffu, a custodian that US authorities had linked to the exchange. The integration of BBVA marks a broader acceptance among traditional banks to handle digital assets, with some expanding their services in response to regulatory developments in the US and EU.

For BBVA, the agreement follows its recent expansion of digital asset offerings. In July, the bank began offering bitcoin and ether trading and custody through its mobile app for Spanish clients, and has provided investment guidance on allocating a portion of portfolios to crypto assets.

Binance, which in 2023 paid a $4.3bn settlement to US regulators over anti-money laundering failures, has since restructured parts of its operations. The exchange has withdrawn from certain jurisdictions but reintroduced some US services this year amid changing regulatory conditions.

Market observers note that separating custody from trading functions has become a growing consideration among institutional and professional traders seeking to mitigate counterparty risk. The BBVA arrangement represents another example of exchanges engaging established financial institutions to perform specific operational roles that were previously handled in-house.

Both Binance and BBVA declined to comment on the details of the agreement.
