Bitcoin Surges Past $72,000 Mark Amid Growing Regulatory Support

On Monday (Mar 11, 2024), Bitcoin reached $72,720, extending its remarkable run from last week, when it exceeded its previous peak set in November 2021. The UK FCA's decision to allow investment exchanges to create a UK-listed market segment for cryptoasset-backed exchange traded notes (cETNs) contributed to the currency's surge.
While the FCA cautioned against the high risks associated with cryptocurrencies and restricted the sale of cETNs to retail investors, the move signified growing regulatory acceptance of digital assets.
Earlier approvals of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tracking Bitcoin's price by US authorities also contributed to the cryptocurrency's momentum. The upcoming "halving" of Bitcoin, reducing the amount of new coins generated and tightening supplies, further supported its price surge.
Despite concerns raised by Gary Gensler, chair of the US Securities and Exchange Commission, regarding Bitcoin's volatility and its use in illicit activities, analysts like Neil Wilson viewed the FCA's decision as a positive development for the cryptocurrency market.
While acknowledging the potential for a significant pullback from parabolic market moves, analysts remain uncertain about Bitcoin's future trajectory amidst increasing institutional interest and regulatory support.
