Roger Ver, a prominent early supporter of Bitcoin, has escalated his legal battle against extradition to the United States by filing a lawsuit with the European Court of Human Rights. Ver, who was arrested in Spain in April 2024, is facing multiple U.S. charges related to tax evasion and financial fraud, with potential penalties exceeding 100 years in prison if convicted.

The case centers on Ver's 2014 renunciation of U.S. citizenship, which triggered an "exit tax" on his crypto holdings. U.S. prosecutors allege Ver underreported his assets and later concealed $240 million in gains through companies registered in the United States.

Ver's legal team contends that Spanish authorities failed to uphold his fundamental rights when they approved the U.S. extradition request. The move to take the case to Europe appears to be a strategy to delay or potentially prevent the extradition.

The case has divided the crypto community. Some view Ver as a scapegoat in a broader governmental crackdown on early crypto innovators. Others argue that his actions warrant prosecution. While Ver has appealed to former President Donald Trump for clemency, public support has been mixed. Notably, Tesla CEO Elon Musk weighed in, stating, "No pardon for Ver."

Despite relinquishing his American citizenship, Ver has publicly described himself as "an American at heart" and continues to argue that his prosecution stems from ideological targeting rather than legal merit.
