Bitfarms Ltd., a publicly traded North American Bitcoin mining company, announced plans to gradually wind down its cryptocurrency mining operations over the next two years as it shifts focus to high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.

The company said its 18-megawatt facility in Washington State will be the first site to convert into a dedicated HPC and AI data centre, with completion expected by December 2026. Bitfarms has secured a $128 million agreement to support equipment procurement and infrastructure build-out. The Washington site represents less than 1% of Bitfarms' potential capacity, but the company expects net operating income from HPC and AI workloads to exceed prior earnings from Bitcoin mining.

The firm cited tightening Bitcoin mining economics as a key reason for the pivot. Rising electricity costs, higher network difficulty, and intensified global competition have pressured margins, whereas AI compute demand continues to grow through long-term enterprise contracts. "Several of our U.S. locations are better suited to supporting high-margin compute applications than maintaining mining operations," Bitfarms stated.

Investors may face short-term uncertainty as the company restructures its asset base. Bitfarms reported a third-quarter loss of $46 million in 2025, highlighting the urgency of diversification.

Industry analysts note that Bitfarms' move reflects a broader trend in which mining firms are exploring alternative uses for their infrastructure amid evolving digital asset economics. Converting mining facilities to AI and HPC data centres could impact domestic Bitcoin hash power, with potential effects on network difficulty and competitive dynamics.

The transition presents operational challenges, including capital-intensive upgrades, new cooling systems, and specialized compute architecture distinct from ASIC-based Bitcoin rigs. Successful execution will depend on securing client demand, meeting efficiency targets, and adhering to rollout timelines.

Bitfarms' strategy may serve as a test case for whether large-scale miners can successfully adapt to shifts in mining profitability while tapping into the growing AI compute market. The coming years will indicate if such transformations become more widespread across the industry.
