Bloomberg Crypto Exposure Analytics Adds BCBS Compliance Support

Bloomberg Crypto Exposure Analytics now helps customers assess compliance with the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision’s (BCBS) prudential standards for banks’ exposure to crypto assets and tokenized real-world assets, the company announced today.
The expanded analytics incorporate data-driven classifications that allow clients to identify and quantify crypto asset exposure in line with the BCBS framework across risk, compliance, and reporting workflows without having to stitch together multiple datasets. Originally launched in 2025 to track direct and indirect crypto asset exposures, the solution now aims to bridge the gap between exposure detection and Basel-aligned classification and reporting.
Bloomberg Crypto Exposure Analytics and the BCBS Framework
As regulators begin implementing the BCBS framework, firms face growing pressure to consistently classify crypto-related exposure across four categories: Group 1a, Group 1b, Group 2a, and Group 2b. A key challenge is that crypto exposure is often embedded within traditional instruments such as ETFs, mutual funds, equities, derivatives, and corporate bonds, rather than limited to direct spot crypto holdings.
Bloomberg’s Crypto Exposure Analytics has identified approximately 1,700 funds with potential relevance under the framework. Roughly half are funds where crypto exposure is not explicitly part of the stated investment strategy, underscoring the need for scalable, transparent exposure classification and accurate exposure mapping to support capital treatment and regulatory reporting.
The solution utilizes Bloomberg’s deep underlying datasets across asset classes to surface crypto asset exposure wherever it appears and apply classifications aligned to the BCBS categories. It covers 110 spot tickers and currency pairs, 950 listed futures contracts, 320,000 listed options contracts, 670 index tickers, 600 unique company tickers, 280 government and corporate bonds, and 125,000 unique fund tickers.
Steven Davis, Global Head of Equity and Listed Derivative Product Reference Data at Morgan Stanley, said the solution provides a differentiator by enabling the firm to identify crypto asset exposure through a robust look-through across funds and ETPs and to classify exposures in line with the BCBS prudential framework. He added that it offers transparency and classification capabilities to support regulatory compliance, risk oversight, and disclosure, while helping institutional securities and wealth management divisions more efficiently identify crypto-related products for clients.
Zane Van Dusen, Global Head of Risk & Investment Analytics Products at Bloomberg, noted that identifying crypto asset exposure is harder than it sounds for most firms, as exposure can hide beneath layers of fund holdings, derivatives, and corporate balance sheets. He said many teams initially managed this through manually maintained watchlists and spreadsheets, but that approach is starting to crack as firms work to comply with new regulatory frameworks and prepare for scrutiny. According to Van Dusen, Bloomberg’s enhanced solution gives clients a ready-to-deploy foundation for identifying, classifying, and monitoring crypto-related risk across regulatory, risk, and compliance workflows.
Bloomberg applies a multi-layered quality and governance approach to maintain the analytics, including the new BCBS classifications. Classifications are derived through a consistent rules-based process using Bloomberg reference data, securities coverage, fund holdings, and company financial disclosures, and are reviewed regularly to account for market and regulatory developments. Each classification includes explainability fields that allow clients to review, validate, and challenge results as part of internal audit and governance processes.
Bloomberg’s Crypto Exposure Analytics is available via Bloomberg Data License at data.bloomberg.com and can be delivered via SFTP, REST API, or into a cloud environment. The same data analytics can also be used within the Security Worksheet desktop solution on the Bloomberg Terminal via the WSL CRYPTOEXPO and WSL CRYPTOETFS worksheets, ensuring data consistency across user and enterprise workflows.
