BNP Paribas has officially signed an agreement to acquire HSBC's private banking operations in Germany, marking a significant expansion of its wealth management services in the region. The deal is set to close in the second half of 2025, pending regulatory approvals and other conditions. If completed, this acquisition will merge HSBC's wealth management segment into BNP Paribas' existing regional division, resulting in a robust combined asset management portfolio exceeding €40 billion.

The Paris-based banking group has identified Germany as a "key geography" with substantial growth potential in wealth management activities. BNP Paribas aims to leverage this opportunity by offering a "comprehensive service offering" that includes investment and corporate banking, as well as asset management services tailored for high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals. Lutz Diederichs, CEO of BNP Paribas Germany, stated, "The further development of our wealth management franchise is an integral part of our growth plan within the German economy," highlighting the strategic significance of this acquisition.

This move follows BNP Paribas' recent €5.4 billion acquisition of AXA's asset management arm, AXA Investment Managers, signaling the group's aggressive growth strategy in the wealth management sector. Diederichs further noted, "Wealth management in Germany serves as an entry portal for our clients into the entire portfolio of services of the BNP Paribas Group." HSBC, for its part, has been divesting its operations in various markets, having previously sold its French retail banking arm and its Argentine operations earlier this year, raising speculation about additional strategic exits.
