Fazzaco learned that the law enforcement of the US and Germany took a joint operation that shut down the ChipMixer Bitcoin anonymizer, with $46 million worth of digital assets confiscated and the supposed operator charged. The US Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that Minh Quốc Nguyễn from Hanoi, Vietnam, faced accusations of money laundering, running an illegal money transmitting business and identity theft in Philadelphia. He remains at large.

Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said the global operation "disabled a prolific cryptocurrency mixer, which has fueled ransomware attacks, state-sponsored crypto heists and darknet purchases across the globe." She added that "Cybercrime seeks to exploit boundaries, but the Department of Justice's network of alliances transcends borders and enables disruption of the criminal activity that jeopardizes our global cybersecurity."

The operation also seized 1,909 BTC and servers with 7TB of data, according to Europol.

The DoJ claimed that ChipMixer was one of the "most popular mixers to wash funds from criminal sources," implying that it was more involved in illegal activities than other mixing services, which help obscure cryptocurrency by blending large groups of tokens together and then sending them randomly to users.

As a major cryptocurrency mixing service that allowed criminals to launder their illegally obtained profits by granting them full anonymity, ChipMixer was not registered with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, nor did it collect user information to be KYC-compliant in spite of the fact that it provided services to customers in the US.
