Cboe Global Markets Updates Trading Data for December and the Full Year 2023

Cboe Global Markets, Inc. (Cboe), a leading provider of global market infrastructure and tradable products, unveiled the updated trading volume statistics across its global business lines for December and the full year 2023, seeing a stable performance in Global FX average daily trading volume (ADV).

Trading Overview for December 2023:

• Global FX average daily trading volume (ADV) for the month totaled $45.6 billion, up 27.1% YoY (December 2022: $35.9 billion) and down 3.5% MoM (November 2023: $47.3 billion).

• ADV of Options came in at 14.5 million contracts, up 5.1% YoY (December 2022: 13.8 million contracts) and up 0.7% MoM (November 2023: 14.4 million contracts).

• ADV of Futures amounted to 201,100 contracts for the month, up 5.2% YoY (December 2022: 191,000 contracts) and down 0.9% MoM (November 2023: 203,000 contracts).

• European Equities ADV was €8.8 billion, up 3.4% YoY (December 2022: €8.5 billion) and down 1.2% MoM (November 2023: €8.9 billion).

• Australian Equities ADV was AUD 777 million, up 17.6% YoY (December 2022: AUD 661 million) and up 14.2% MoM (November 2023: 681 million).

• Japanese Equities ADV was JPY 192 billion, jump 223.3% YoY (December 2022: JPY 59 billion) and up 5.9% MoM (November 2023: JPY 182 billion).

Trading Overview for the Full Year 2023:

• Global FX ADV for the year totaled $44.7 billion, up 9.3% compared to $40.9 billion in 2022.

• ADV of Options reached 14.6 million contracts, up 7.4% compared to 13.6 million contracts in the prior year.

• ADV of Futures rose by 2.3% from 218,000 contracts in 2022 to 223,000 contracts.

• European Equities ADV was €9.4 billion, down 13.2% from €10.8 billion in 2022.

• Australian Equities ADV was AUD 704 million, down 10.2% compared to AUD 784 million in 2022.

• Japanese Equities ADV was JPY 177 billion, up 23.5% compared to JPY 143 billion in 2022.

December and Full Year 2023 Trading Volume Highlights:

US Options:

• Total volume across Cboe's four options exchanges was 3.7 billion contracts in 2023, the fourth consecutive record-breaking year

• Total options ADV reached an all-time high of 14.6 million contracts traded per day in 2023

• Cboe's proprietary product suite set several volume records for the year, including S&P 500 Index (SPX) options traded a total of 729.3 million contracts, with an ADV of 2.9 million contracts; and, Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) options traded a total of 185.7 million contracts, with an ADV of 743 thousand contracts.

• Trading in SPX options set a new single-day volume record on December 14, 2023 with 4.8 million contracts traded.

Global FX

• Global FX reported several records for full year 2023, including Overall Spot ADV of $43.6 billion; and, Cboe SEF (Swap Execution Facility) Non-Deliverable Forwards ADV of $1.1 billion.
