Cboe to Exit Japanese Equities Market Amid Strategic Realignment

Cboe Global Markets has announced plans to shutter its Japanese equities operations by the end of August 2025, citing unsustainable market conditions.
Cboe Global Markets revealed on Wednesday that it will wind down its Japanese equities business, including its proprietary trading system and the Cboe BIDS Japan block trading platform. Operations are scheduled to cease on August 29, 2025, pending regulatory consultations.
The move marks a shift in Cboe's strategic direction as it reallocates resources toward higher-return areas. In a company statement, Cboe said the decision was taken in light of "evolving business conditions, which challenged the financial sustainability" of continuing its presence in Japan.
"While we have made the strategic decision to exit the Japanese equities business, we remain committed to serving Japan and its financial community by leveraging the strengths of our global derivatives and data capabilities," said Craig Donohue, CEO of Cboe Global Markets.
Financially, the company expects the wind-down to have minimal impact on its 2025 revenue and adjusted operating expenses, with projected annual savings of $10 million to $12 million after full implementation. Further details are expected during Cboe's Q2 2025 earnings call on August 1.
