CFTC Releases Data: Retail FX Deposits Drop 6.42% at Interactive Brokers in March 2022

​The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has published its monthly report for March 2022, revealing a month-on-month decline of 6.51 percent in retail FX deposits compared with the $540.91 million reported in February 2022.

The report covers data for FCMs that are registered as Retail Foreign Exchange Dealers (RFEDs) and those included as broker-dealers that hold retail forex obligations in the United States, namely Gain Capital Group LLC, IG US LLC, Interactive Brokers LLC, Oanda Corporation and CHARLES SCHWAB Futures & Forex LLC.

All Brokers Saw Decrease on Amount of Retail Forex Obligation

For purposes of comparison, the month-on-month change of the recent months has been outlined to illustrate the disparities.

According to the agency, the FX funds held at the five registered brokerages hit over $505.7 million in March 2022. All the five brokers listed witnessed a decrease in Retail Forex Obligations: Gain Capital (-$14,966,944 or -7.01%), IG US (-$3,973,533 or -9.12%), Interactive Brokers (-$1,380,403 or -6.42%), OANDA (-$14,217,690 or -7.21%) and CHARLES SCHWAB (-$663,383 or -1.02%).

CHARLES SCHWAB Gains in Market Share

Looking at the market share of these five brokers, distribution changed slightly in March relative to the month prior.

GAIN Capital remained the leader in terms of market share, commanding a 39 percent share. OANDA also solidified its stance as the second largest in the US with 36 percent market share, while CHARLES SCHWAB retained the third rank with 13 percent, an increase of 1 percent compared to the last month. Interactive Brokers and IG US acquired 4 and 8 percent share respectively.
