CFTC Releases Report: Retail Forex Funds in US See A Slight 0.38% Decline in December

The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has released its latest monthly report, which shows that retail forex funds in December 2023 decreased by 0.38% M-o-M.
The report covers registered retail foreign exchange dealers (RFEDs) and broker-dealers operating in the US. These include CHARLES SCHWAB Futures & Forex LLC, Gain Capital Group LLC, IG US LLC, Interactive Brokers LLC, OANDA Corporation, and Trading.com Markets.
In December 2023, the total forex funds held by these six registered brokers amounted to US$516,235,266, down 0.38% from US$518,196,590 reported in November 2023.
Compared with US$482,214,341 in December 2022, however, it was up 7.06% Y-o-Y. The following chart is a comprehensive overview of the data of these six brokers in 2023 (as of December).

Registered Brokers' Performance: Four Down, Two Up
Among the six brokers listed, four experienced a drop in their retail forex funds in December 2023, while the other two saw an increase.
CHARLES SCHWAB declined 1.75% M-o-M, reducing its total by $ 1,090,859; IG US LLC declined 3.78% M-o-M, reducing its total by $2,142,587; Interactive Brokers LLC fell 4.26% M-o-M, reducing its total by $1,382,664; and Trading.com Markets declined 3.27% M-o-M, reducing its total by $43,647.
For the remaining two, Gain Capital rose 0.88% M-o-M, increasing its total by $1,756,456; and OANDA rose 0.57% M-o-M, increasing its total by about $941,977.
Year-on-Year Changes of the Six Brokers

Compared with the data of the same month last year, CHARLES SCHWAB was the only broker that saw a decline, which is 9.01%, reducing $6,066,325. Among the rest, Trading.com Markets had the highest Y-o-Y growth, rising 84.30%, rising its total by $590,965.
Gain Capital rose 9.08% Y-o-Y, increasing its total by $16,751,307; IG US rose 22.51% Y-o-Y, increasing its total by $10,032,154; Interactive Brokers rose 25.92%, increasing its total by $6,399,761; and OANDA rose 3.93% Y-o-Y, increasing its total by $6,313,063.
About CFTC's Monthly Report
As per CFTC's request, Futures commission merchants (FCMs) and retail foreign exchange dealers (RFEDs) must file monthly financial reports with the CFTC's Market Participants Division (MPD) within 17 business days after the end of the month. The report released this month reflects the financial information filed as of January 31, 2024, reflecting the financial situation of the relevant brokers as of December 31, 2023.
