The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has issued a warning yesterday about the growing use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) by fraudsters to create highly convincing scams. In its latest advisory from the Office of Customer Education and Outreach (OCEO), the agency highlights how criminals are leveraging AI to fabricate realistic images, voices, videos, and even live-streamed video chats to deceive victims.

According to the advisory titled Criminals Increasing Use of Generative AI to Commit Fraud, scammers are deploying AI to produce fake identification documents, manipulate their appearances in video calls, and create fraudulent financial trading platforms that mimic legitimate businesses. Melanie Devoe, Director of the OCEO, cautioned that these advancements make distinguishing real from fake increasingly difficult.

"Fraudsters can use new technologies to mask their identities, not only in still photographs, say, in social media profiles, but also in video chats that alter their facial features and voices to match," Devoe stated. "Identifying real from fake can be difficult. The best defense is to never give money to people you only meet online."

The CFTC's warning aligns with similar concerns raised by the FBI, which has also noted an increase in AI-driven scams, including those targeting individuals in relationship-based investment frauds.

To combat this growing threat, the advisory provides recommendations for consumers, such as tightening social media privacy settings, avoiding the sharing of sensitive personal information online, and being cautious of unfamiliar phone numbers and unsolicited financial opportunities.
