Chime Files Confidentially for IPO Amid Market Uncertainty

The company is aiming for a public debut in 2025, but the exact timing remains uncertain and subject to change.

Operating from San Francisco, Chime provides users with app-based financial services, including checking and high-yield savings accounts. It does not function as a traditional bank, which allows it to maintain lower operational costs by avoiding physical branches. This asset-light model is shared by other fintech firms, such as the UK's Monzo Bank Ltd., enabling them to compete with established banks.

Chime has attracted significant investment, securing $2.65 billion to date, with notable backers including Sequoia Capital and Coatue Management. Earlier this year, the company introduced a feature allowing customers to access up to $500 of their paychecks before the official payday. Additionally, Chime has partnered with the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, featuring its branding on the team's jerseys.

In 2021, Chime was valued at $25 billion during a peak in technology investments, but the market has since faced challenges related to rising interest rates and inflation. Reports indicate that Chime has engaged Morgan Stanley to serve as the lead underwriter for its IPO plans, as the IPO landscape shows signs of recovery going into the next year.

While a spokesperson for Chime declined to provide further details, the company's plans reflect a broader trend among fintech startups looking to navigate an evolving financial landscape.
