Cloudflare has announced the launch of NET Dollar, a U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin designed to support microtransactions and automated payments across an AI-driven Internet.

The company said NET Dollar is intended to provide financial infrastructure for AI agents, developers, and digital creators, allowing them to transact seamlessly across platforms and geographies.

"For decades, the business model of the Internet ran on ad platforms and bank transfers," said Matthew Prince, Cloudflare's co-founder and CEO. "The Internet's next business model will be powered by pay-per-use, fractional payments, and microtransactions." He added that NET Dollar aims to help build "a more open and valuable Internet for everyone."

Potential applications include personal AI agents booking travel or making small purchases automatically, business agents paying suppliers upon delivery, and developers monetizing APIs through usage-based pricing. Content creators could also be compensated for original work through direct micropayments.

Cloudflare framed the stablecoin as part of a broader effort to modernize financial rails for the Internet, citing the need for systems that operate across currencies, jurisdictions, and time zones while maintaining transparency and security.

While NET Dollar's timeline and technical details remain limited, the announcement positions Cloudflare alongside a growing number of technology firms exploring stablecoins as part of next-generation payment systems.
