CME and Google Cloud Advance on Digital Asset Solutions

CME Group and Google Cloud have announced a further expansion of their partnership, focusing on piloting solutions for seamless and secure wholesale payments and the tokenization of assets. The companies revealed that CME Group has successfully completed the initial phase of integration and testing of Google Cloud Universal Ledger (GCUL), a new distributed ledger technology developed by Google Cloud.
Terry Duffy, CME Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, emphasized the potential benefits of this collaboration, stating, "As the President and new Administration have encouraged Congress to create landmark legislation for common-sense market structure, we are pleased to partner with Google Cloud to enable innovative solutions for low-cost, digital transfer of value. Google Cloud Universal Ledger has the potential to deliver significant efficiencies for collateral, margin, settlement and fee payments as the world moves toward 24/7 trading."
Rohit Bhat, General Manager, Financial Services at Google Cloud, highlighted the strategic nature of the partnership, saying, "Our core mission is to provide our partners with the most advanced infrastructure, empowering them to accelerate innovation, drive efficiencies, and overcome the complexities inherent in today's financial systems. Partnering with CME Group to innovate with GCUL exemplifies this commitment, demonstrating how Google Cloud helps partners transform their businesses through strategic collaborations and modern infrastructure, unlocking significant opportunities for the global financial market."
GCUL is described as an innovative and programmable distributed ledger designed for easy integration and use by traditional financial institutions. It aims to simplify the management of accounts and assets and facilitate transfers within a private and permissioned network. The collaborative platform intends to empower participants to leverage their existing capabilities and introduce new services for their clients.
CME Group and Google Cloud plan to initiate direct testing with market participants later in 2025, with the goal of launching new services in 2026.
