CME Group FX Futures and Options Open Interest Hits Record

CME Group's FX futures and options reached a new open interest record of 4,410,167 contracts on September 4, 2026, surpassing the previous high of 4,269,622 contracts set on June 11, 2026, according to the derivatives marketplace.
The number of large open interest holders in FX futures also hit an all-time high of 1,446, as noted in the CFTC's August 25 Commitment of Traders report. Asset managers exceeded $200 billion in FX futures notional open interest for the first time.
Paul Houston, Global Head of FX Products at CME Group, said the record participation reflects growing buy-side demand for the capital efficiencies, transparency and central clearing that futures provide. He added that clients are increasingly using the exchange's FX futures and options to manage risk across a broader range of currency pairs, from major currencies to emerging markets.
