CME Group Plans to Launch Nasdaq CME Crypto Index Futures

International derivatives marketplace CME Group announced plans to launch Nasdaq CME Crypto Index futures on June 8, pending regulatory review. These futures will be the company's first-ever market-cap weighted futures contract, available in both micro-sized and larger-sized contracts. They aim to provide a capital-efficient way to gain exposure to top cryptocurrencies through a single, financially settled futures contract.
Giovanni Vicioso, Global Head of Cryptocurrency Products at CME Group, stated the new futures offer a regulated, cost-effective way to hedge or gain broad exposure to the crypto market. He noted demand for regulated cryptocurrency futures is rising, with average daily volume up 43% year-to-date.
Sean Wasserman, Head of Index Product Management at Nasdaq, highlighted growing demand for benchmarks that reflect the broader market with proper governance and transparency. The Nasdaq CME Crypto Index serves as that foundation, and futures linked to it represent a natural extension of index-based frameworks supporting market development.
At expiration, Nasdaq CME Crypto Index futures will be financially settled to the value of the Nasdaq CME Crypto Settlement Price Index. This index measures the performance of the largest and most actively traded cryptocurrencies, currently including bitcoin, ether, SOL, XRP, ADA, LINK, and lumens.
