CME Group Records 19% Jump in ADV in 2022

CME Group, the world's leading derivatives marketplace, has released its market statistics for the full-year, the fourth quarter and December 2022, showing it reached a record average daily volume (ADV) of 23.3 million contracts during the year, an increase of 19% over 2021. In the fourth quarter of 2022, the ADV increased from 20.5 million contracts to 21.8 million contracts in Q4 2021, up 6% on a yearly basis. The ADV in December 2022 reached 19.2 million contracts, an increase of 7% comparing to 18.0 million contracts in the same period in 2021.

In the full-year 2022, the exchange saw great growth in ADV across asset classes including equity index, interest rate, foreign exchange and cryptocurrency contracts, up 39%, 18%, 24% and 82% respectively. The ADV outside the United States increased 15% to 6.3 million contracts, including 30% growth in Latin America, 27% in Asia, and 10% in EMEA.

In Q4 2022, CME Group recorded an increase of 26% in equity index ADV and an increase of 25% in foreign exchange ADV. Meanwhile, the ADV of metal contracts increased by 7% on a YoY basis.

Asset classes in December also showed strong growth rate. The SOFR futures and options ADV increased 862%, with record OI of 34,832,123 contracts on December 15. The month witnessed the jump in ADV of metals, interest rate and foreign exchange contracts, reaching 0.4 million, 7.9 million and 1.05 million, up 22%, 12% and 20% respectively on yearly basis. However, it also recorded a yearly slight decrease of 3% in ADV of energy contracts, which down from 1.85 million contracts in December 2021 to 1.79 million contracts in the same period of 2022.
