CME Group Registers Second-Highest September and Q3 ADV on Record

CME Group, the world's leading derivatives marketplace, published its financial results for September and the third quarter (Q3) of 2023, reporting an average daily volume (ADV) of 22.7 million contracts in September, recording the Group's second-highest September ADV. ADV for Q3 2023 came in at 22.3 million contracts, the second-highest Q3 volume recorded by the company.

September 2023 ADV Across Asset Classes:

  • Interest Rate ADV was 10.2 million contracts, a decrease of 21% MoM and a decrease of 10% YoY. SOFR futures ADV increased 22% to 3.2 million contracts and SOFR options ADV increased 47% to 1.2 million contracts.

  • Equity Index ADV was 7.1 million contracts, an increase of 10% MoM and a decrease of 24% YoY. Equity Index options ADV came in at 1,622,622 contracts, hitting a record high.

  • FX ADV was 1.2 million contracts, a significant increase of 57% MoM and a decrease of 18% YoY.

  • Metals ADV was 517,000 contracts, an increase of 4% MoM and a slight decrease of 2% YoY.

Q3 2023 ADV Across Asset Classes:

  • Interest Rate ADV was 11.0 million contracts, an increase of 6% YoY. Ultra U.S. Treasury Bond futures came in at 308,238 contracts, hitting arecord high. SOFR futures ADV increased 44% to 3 million contracts and SOFR options ADV increased 101% to 1.2 million contracts.

  • Equity Index ADV was 6.4 million contracts, a decrease of 15% YoY. However, Equity Index Options came in at 1,450,087 contracts, E-Mini S&P 500 options came in at 1,345,353 contracts, and E-Mini Nasdaq 100 options came in at 76,191 contracts, all hitting a record high.

  • FX ADV was 942,000 contracts, a decrease of 14% YoY.

  • Metals ADV was 528,000 contracts, an increase of 6% YoY.
