CME Group, the world's leading derivatives marketplace, has achieved a historic milestone with its international average daily trading volume (ADV) reaching an unprecedented 7.8 million contracts in the second quarter of 2024, marking a notable 23% year-on-year increase. The surge in trading activity reflects heightened global demand for risk management solutions amid persistent economic uncertainties.

The record-breaking performance was driven by robust growth across all asset classes, with particularly strong contributions from interest rate and equity products. Commodities also experienced substantial growth, with metals trading volumes increasing by 50%, energy by 40%, and agricultural products by 25%.

Julie Winkler, Senior Managing Director and Chief Commercial Officer at CME Group, attributed the record Q2 international ADV to increasing client reliance on CME Group markets for hedging price risks in volatile market conditions. The strong performance in EMEA and APAC regions was particularly noteworthy, where trading volumes surged by 28% and 27%, respectively, year-on-year.

In addition to record-breaking trading volumes, CME Group reported significant milestones in specific regions. In APAC, metals trading volumes surged by 62%, while agricultural products saw a 14% increase year-over-year. Similarly, Latin America (LatAm) and Canada reported ADV increases of 8% and 11%, respectively, driven by robust trading in metals and energy sectors.

The impressive Q2 performance underscores CME Group's pivotal role in global financial markets, providing essential risk management tools that empower clients to navigate market uncertainties effectively. As economic conditions continue to evolve, CME Group remains committed to delivering innovative derivatives solutions that support market stability and facilitate global trade.
