CME Group Reports Record January Trading Volumes in Futures, FX, and Crypto Markets

CME Group, the world's leading derivatives marketplace, has reported a record-breaking start to the year, with its January 2025 average daily volume (ADV) reaching 25.7 million contracts, the highest ever recorded for the month. This marks a 2% increase from January 2024, driven by surging activity in futures, foreign exchange (FX) trading, and cryptocurrency derivatives.

Record Futures Trading in Treasury and Equity Markets

Interest rate derivatives remained the most actively traded segment, with an ADV of 11.7 million contracts. U.S. Treasury futures and options reached a record January ADV of 6.7 million contracts, driven by strong demand for 10-year U.S. Treasury Note options, which surged 54% year-over-year to 1 million contracts. U.S. Treasury Bond options also saw a 47% increase, reaching 207,000 contracts.

Equity index futures also experienced significant growth, with overall ADV climbing 7% year-over-year. Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100 futures saw a 43% increase, reaching 1.7 million contracts per day, while Micro E-mini S&P 500 futures rose 28% to 1 million contracts daily.

FX Trading Gains Momentum

The foreign exchange (FX) market demonstrated strong growth, with an ADV of 1 million contracts, up 15% year-over-year. British Pound futures rose 34% to 129,000 contracts per day, while Canadian Dollar futures surged 56% to 115,000 contracts. The overall notional value traded in FX futures, options, and cash markets reached $150 billion daily.

Cryptocurrency Derivatives Surge

Cryptocurrency derivatives posted an exceptional 180% year-over-year increase in ADV, reaching 198,000 contracts, equivalent to $13.6 billion in notional value. Micro Bitcoin futures led the charge, with a 255% surge to 84,000 contracts per day, while Micro Ether futures rose 223% to 69,000 contracts daily.

Energy and Agricultural Markets See Record Activity

Energy trading posted record gains, with ADV rising 29% to 3.2 million contracts. Energy options set an all-time record with an ADV of 606,000 contracts, while Henry Hub Natural Gas options also reached a historic high of 385,000 contracts. WTI Crude Oil futures saw a 34% increase, with an ADV of 1.3 million contracts.

Agricultural derivatives also posted record volumes, with an ADV of 2 million contracts, a 35% increase from the previous year. Agricultural options trading hit a new milestone with an ADV of 469,000 contracts, while Corn futures surged 60% to 505,000 contracts, and Soybean futures rose 31% to 306,000 contracts.

International Participation and Expanding Market Reach

CME Group's international markets continued to grow, with ADV outside the U.S. increasing 11% to 7.8 million contracts. European and Middle Eastern (EMEA) trading volumes rose 12% to 5.7 million contracts, while Asia-Pacific trading advanced 8% to 1.8 million contracts daily.
