CME Group to Launch Spodumene Futures Contract

CME Group, a leading international derivatives marketplace, has announced an expansion of its battery metals suite with the planned launch of a Spodumene CIF China (Fastmarkets) Futures contract on October 28, 2024, pending regulatory review.
This initiative comes in response to the rapid growth and evolving dynamics of the battery metals market, which is crucial for the production of lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles and renewable energy storage.
Jin Hennig, Global Head of Metals at CME Group, commented, "Our suite of cobalt and lithium products serve an important role in the rapidly evolving battery metals space, with industry adoption accelerating."
Raju Daswani, CEO at Fastmarkets, described the upcoming contract as a significant advancement for the lithium market, stating, "With this contract, the industry gains a tool to manage price risk associated with the spodumene price, conversion margins, as well as take a view on the lithium conversion spread itself."
CME Group is already recognized as a dominant force in managing battery metals risk, evidenced by the open interest in Lithium Hydroxide futures surpassing 30,000 contracts for the first time this year, extending through 2026. Similarly, the open interest in Cobalt Metal futures remains strong, extending through 2028. The launch of Spodumene CIF China (Fastmarkets) futures, which will be financially settled, is expected to further enhance price transparency and efficiency in the battery metals market.
