Coinbase and Kraken Secure EU MiCA Licenses, Eye European Expansion

Major cryptocurrency exchanges Coinbase and Kraken have announced securing licenses under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework, a development expected to facilitate broader expansion across the European Economic Area.
Coinbase recently revealed it obtained its MiCA license from Luxembourg's Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF). This approval will allow Coinbase to offer its full suite of crypto services to a market of over 450 million people across all 27 EU member states. The company also plans to establish its European crypto hub in Luxembourg, which it described as a "forward-thinking financial hub" committed to blockchain innovation and regulatory clarity. This MiCA license unifies Coinbase's previous regulatory approvals in Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain. Coinbase views the MiCA license as both a regulatory achievement and a foundation for growth, while also urging European policymakers to continue ambitious initiatives to maintain the region's competitive edge.
Separately, Kraken announced on Wednesday that it received its MiCA license from the Central Bank of Ireland. This approval builds upon Kraken's prior Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) and Electronic Money Institution (EMI) licenses. Arjun Sethi, co-CEO of Kraken, commented, "We believe trust is the most valuable currency in crypto, and it's something you earn." He added that their team has "worked tirelessly to meet the Central Bank of Ireland's gold standard regulatory expectations." Kraken joins a growing list of exchanges, including OKX, Crypto.com, and Bybit, that are aligning with the EU's landmark crypto framework. Kraken's move into Europe follows its recent relocation of global headquarters to Wyoming, citing the state's crypto-friendly regulatory stance, and the dismissal of a lawsuit from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in March. The exchange also recently launched Kraken Prime, a prime brokerage platform for institutional clients.
