Coinbase Reports Declining Revenue and Profit in Q3 2024

Leading cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global Inc. has released its financial results for the third quarter of 2024, revealing a downturn in performance as the crypto market experienced a slowdown. The company's revenue and profits for the quarter fell short of analysts' expectations, highlighting the challenges faced by crypto platforms in the current economic climate.
According to the report, Coinbase recorded a total revenue of $1.2 billion in Q3 2024, a 17% decrease compared to the previous quarter and slightly below the projected $1.254 billion. The company's net income stood at $75 million, which includes a $121 million pre-tax loss on its cryptocurrency investment portfolio. Despite these figures, Coinbase reported its sixth consecutive quarter of positive Adjusted EBITDA, reaching $449 million.
A significant contributor to the decline was transaction revenue, which amounted to $573 million, a 27% drop from Q2 2024. This decrease was attributed to reduced trading volumes and lower cryptocurrency prices, as market volatility, a key driver of trading activity, decreased by approximately 5% compared to the previous quarter.
Revenue from subscriptions and services also saw a 7% quarter-over-quarter decrease, reaching $556 million. This decline was primarily due to lower average crypto asset values. However, stablecoin revenue showed positive growth, increasing by 3% to $247 million, driven by higher average USD balances on the platform, indicating increased user engagement with stablecoins.
Coinbase managed to reduce its total operating expenses by 6% to $1.0 billion in Q3. Notably, development and technology costs increased by 4% to $377 million, signaling the company's continued investment in its platform. In October 2024, Coinbase also approved a $1 billion share repurchase program, demonstrating confidence in its financial stability and future growth prospects.
Following the earnings announcement, Coinbase's shares (COIN) experienced a decline in after-hours trading, dropping by around 7%. This market reaction reflects investor concerns regarding the company's financial performance and the broader challenges within the cryptocurrency market.
Looking ahead to the fourth quarter of 2024, Coinbase anticipates subscription and services revenue to be in the range of $505 million to $580 million. The company remains cautious due to potential headwinds, including a 10% decrease in Ethereum's average price in October and possible interest rate changes.
In its final remarks, Coinbase acknowledged the volatility and difficulties in the cryptocurrency market but emphasized its ongoing efforts to diversify revenue streams and enhance its platform to navigate the evolving crypto landscape.
