Coinbase Restores Trading After a Six-Hour AWS-Related Outage
Coinbase restored trading on all markets after a six-hour outage caused by an issue with Amazon Web Services. The disruption impacted the exchange's web and mobile interfaces, preventing users from executing transactions. Coinbase Support stated customer funds remained safe during the incident.
The exchange initially placed markets in a "cancel-only" mode, allowing only order cancellations, before transitioning to an auction mode. This permitted users to post limit orders and view indicative opening prices. Full service restoration occurred around 1 AM PDT.
Amazon confirmed the outage stemmed from increased temperatures at a data center in northern Virginia. The incident also affected the CME, the world's largest derivatives marketplace, though CME did not publicly attribute the cause.
AWS provides critical infrastructure for much of the financial services industry, but outages are not uncommon. Last year, several AWS disruptions impacted multiple trading platforms. Another significant infrastructure issue was a Cloudflare outage that affected broker websites including Monaxa, Skilling.com, Xtrade, and FXPro.
