Concerns Grow Over Dubai Broker's Disappearance and Unaccounted Investor Funds

Source: Xiao

According to reports from Khaleej Times on May 20, a broker named Gulf First Commercial Brokers abruptly ceased operations last month, leaving behind vacant offices at Capital Golden Tower and a flurry of unanswered calls from distressed clients. The company had been operating out of suites 302 and 305, which were reportedly transformed into a high-pressure sales floor targeting retail investors across the Emirates.

Multiple sources familiar with the matter describe a well-oiled scheme in which individuals were contacted via unsolicited cold calls and presented with seemingly lucrative investment opportunities in the foreign exchange (forex) market. Clients were reportedly directed to a trading platform called Sigma-One Capital, which claimed affiliation with Gulf First and was marketed as a secure, regulated portal for online trading.

"The people on the phone sounded confident, they spoke in financial jargon, they showed me charts and even small profits at first," said one investor who asked to remain anonymous. "It all felt very professional."

Both companies allegedly operated under the same roof, and staff often used the two names interchangeably, further confusing clients about who exactly they were dealing with. Sigma-One Capital purported to have offices in both Dubai and the Caribbean nation of St. Lucia, but investigations have not substantiated either claim. The address listed in Dubai's Musalla Tower turned out to be unoccupied, and there is no verifiable corporate presence in St. Lucia either.

Neither Gulf First Commercial Brokers nor Sigma-One Capital appear to have held licenses from any of the UAE's primary financial regulators, such as the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) or the Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA). This lack of regulation has complicated matters for investors now seeking legal avenues for recovery.

Authorities are aware of the situation. Dubai Police confirmed that formal complaints have been lodged against both entities. However, the absence of regulatory registration may limit the scope of investigation and restitution.
