CySEC Launches Investor Protection Campaign Targeting Finfluencers

The Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) has rolled out a new, extensive investor protection campaign designed to address the increasing influence of social media and financial influencers - commonly referred to as "finfluencers" - on the financial markets.
This initiative includes the issuance of a formal Warning, an informative Investor Guide, and a series of social media posts aimed at educating the public. The regulator has cautioned that individuals or entities providing financial advice through media outlets, including social media platforms, may be violating the EU Market Abuse Regulation.
In the warning, CySEC stated, "We expect that any recommendations and other information related to investments are neutral, clear, and disclose any conflict of interest."
Dr. George Theocharidis, the Chairman of CySEC, highlighted the significant role social media plays in marketing strategies, noting that "the lack of formal financial education and the rise of digital platforms" has allowed finfluencers to gain traction.
He pointed out that while some online sources provide legitimate investment advice, many put investors at risk due to misleading information.
The Investor Guide, titled "Unveiling the World of Finfluencers," aims to empower investors by enhancing their ability to critically evaluate online financial content and understand the potential dangers associated with unauthorized advisers.
Dr. Theocharidis stressed the importance of caution, urging the public to be skeptical of the motives behind the advice they receive from influencers.
