In Hong Kong, investment bankers are risking losing jobs amidst a slowdown in initial public offerings (IPOs) and as employers look to let go highly compensated staff. In the past year, about 200 Hong Kong bankers were laid off, according to Bloomberg Intelligence senior analyst Francis Chan.
UBS is considering five waves of job cuts from June to November, as it pushes through its takeover of Credit Suisse, with thousands of employees to be impacted. The Swiss bank is looking to cut around $6 billion in employee costs.
What’s more, the techn industry has been particularly hard hit by layoffs. So far in 2024, tech companies have announced 495 layoffs, with 105,934 people impacted.
Fintech super appRevolut, however, has been kicking against the trend for layoffs and hiring freezes. It plans to grow its headcount by 40% in 2024, hitting 11,500 employees.
