Deutsche Börse has introduced social media monitoring into its market surveillance systems by integrating technology from German data analytics firm Stockpulse with the Scila platform it has used for more than a decade.

The integration is designed to improve oversight of both cash and derivatives markets. Stockpulse specializes in AI-driven analysis of social media data, capturing global conversations around more than 70,000 equities and thousands of cryptocurrencies. The firm provides near real-time news streams, sentiment scores, and buzz metrics, which can be correlated with trading patterns.

By embedding this data into Scila's system, Deutsche Börse aims to strengthen its ability to detect market manipulation or irregular activity linked to online chatter. The move makes it the first major exchange to adopt this type of surveillance approach.

Andreas Mitschke, head of trading surveillance at Deutsche Börse, described the addition as "invaluable," noting: "The ability to correlate trading patterns with social media activity provides our team with crucial context for investigating potential market abuse."

The development reflects growing recognition that online platforms play a significant role in influencing investor behavior, particularly around smaller stocks and digital assets. Market regulators worldwide have faced challenges in keeping up with the speed at which information—or misinformation—spreads across forums, chat groups, and social networks.

For Deutsche Börse, the use of AI-enhanced analytics marks a shift toward more proactive monitoring. While traditional surveillance relies heavily on transactional data, adding sentiment and buzz indicators gives compliance teams a broader view of market dynamics, particularly in periods of heightened volatility.
