Deutsche Börse Reports 21.3% Decline in Cash Market Turnover for 2023

Deutsche Börse published its cash market trading statistics for the full year 2023 and December. In total, an order book turnover of €1,232.6 billion was achieved last year on the trading venues Börse Frankfurt and Xetra, decreasing 21.3% from €1,565.6 billion in 2022. Of this amount, €1,197.5 billion was attributable to Xetra and €35.1 billion to Börse Frankfurt.

By type of asset class, equities trading for the full year accounted for €1,030.57 billion in the entire cash market. Trading in ETFs/ETCs/ETNs generated a turnover of €181.79 billion. Turnover in bonds was €8.56 billion, in other instruments €11.15 billion.

The stock with the highest order book turnover on Xetra in 2023 within the DAX was SAP SE with €53.9 billion, followed by Allianz SE with €50.2 billion and Siemens AG with €49.7 billion. Lufthansa AG topped the MDAX index at €10.3 billion, while Morphosys AG led the SDAX with €1.5 billion. Formycon AG ranked as the most traded share in the SME segment Scale with a volume of €200 million. In the ETF segment, the iShares Core MSCI World generated the largest volume on Xetra with €6.1 billion in the year 2023.

In December 2023, the order book turnover totaled €97.4 billion, 5.9% higher than €92.01 billion in December 2022 and 6.8% lower than €104.46 billion in November 2023. Of this amount, €94.1 billion was attributable to Xetra and €3.3 billion to Börse Frankfurt. The average daily turnover on Xetra in December was €5 billion (previous year: €4.3 billion / previous month: €4.6 billion).

By type of asset class, equities trading for the month accounted for €79.17 billion in the entire cash market. Trading in ETFs/ETCs/ETNs generated a turnover of €16.25 billion. Turnover in bonds was €0.97 billion, in funds €0.05 billion, and in other instruments €0.95 billion.
