Uruguay-based payments company dLocal has secured an Authorised Payment Institution (API) licence from the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), marking a significant milestone in its global expansion.

The new licence enables dLocal to offer cross-border payment services and localized solutions to UK merchants, leveraging its network of over 900 alternative payment methods (APMs). The firm has also partnered with the International Chamber of Commerce UK (ICC) in the Trade for Prosperity programme, supporting British businesses in accessing international markets.

Founded in 2016, dLocal specializes in payment processing for merchants in emerging markets across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. With its API licence, the company aims to help UK-based businesses "expand their international reach," according to a company spokesperson.

The announcement coincides with speculation about a potential sale of dLocal, as Reuters recently reported the firm's engagement with Morgan Stanley to explore acquisition opportunities. The company, listed on the New York Stock Exchange, is valued at approximately $3.27 billion.
