ESMA Releases Annual Transparency Calculations, Sets 2026 Implementation Date

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has published its annual transparency calculations for equity and equity-like instruments. These calculations will define market transparency requirements for the coming year.
This release follows ESMA's recent finalization of revised MiFIR standards. Those standards introduced fixed transparency thresholds, new post-trade reporting fields, and updated timing rules. The changes affect how derivative trades are reported and displayed, impacting CFD brokers that hedge on EU venues.
The annual assessments cover liquidity, the identification of the most relevant market, average transaction values, standard market sizes, and the average daily number of transactions. The results guide pre-trade and post-trade transparency thresholds and determine applicable tick-size regimes.
ESMA confirmed the revised transparency rules for equity and equity-like instruments will take effect on 2 March 2026. The calculations published now will remain applicable until the next annual update.
Separately, ESMA is advancing plans to consolidate post-trade derivatives data across the EU. This includes laying the groundwork for a pan-EU OTC derivatives consolidated tape targeted for 2027. Brokers will need to adapt systems for new reporting requirements, identifiers, and deferral logic.
In a related development, ESMA has opened the application process for a Consolidated Tape Provider (CTP) for OTC derivatives. The selected provider will aggregate post-trade data from venues into a single electronic feed. It will operate under ESMA supervision for five years, with a final selection expected by July 2026. While designed for all participants, CFD brokers are anticipated to be key users as they comply with incoming transparency rules.
Market participants are encouraged to monitor the calculations regularly. The full data is accessible through ESMA's FITRS and the Register web interface.
