Euronext Records the Fourth Consecutive Monthly Growth in FX Trading Volume for August 2023

Euronext released its trading data for August 2023 yesterday (September 7). Data show that the exchange's FX trading volume has grown steadily for four consecutive months in August, but the ADV of FX, spot market and derivatives market have all declined month-on-month.

Cash market

• Number of transactions of total cash market for the month amounted to 49,021,716 contracts, up 3% than 47,483,932 contracts in the prior month and 19% lower than 60,484,724 contracts in the same month of last year.

• ​Average daily trading volume of cash markets came in at 2,131,379 contracts, down 6% compared to 2,261,140 contracts in July 2023 and down 19% compared to 2,629,771 contracts in August 2022.

• ​Transaction value of cash market during the period was €195,055 million, an increase of 2% compared to €191,236 million in this July and a decrease of 2% compared to €199,842 million in last August.

• Average daily value for the month reached €8,481 million, a decrease of 7% compared to €9,106 million in the prior month and a decrease of 2% compared to €8,689 million in the year-ago month.

Derivatives Market

• Total trading volume of futures amounted to 4,595,000 lots, dropping 3.7% compared to 4,771,687 lots in July 2023 and dropping 5.7% compared to 4,871,019 lots in August 2022.

• ​Total trading volume of options came in at 7,585,179 lots, going up 2.9% compared to 7,371,575 lots in the prior month and up 9.1% compared to 6,953,030 lots in August of last year.

• ​Average daily trading volume of futures for the month decreased by 12.1% from 227,223 lots in July to 199,783 lots, a decrease of 5.7% on a YoY basis (August 2022: 211,783 lots).

• Average daily trading volume of options for the month decreased by 6.0% from 351,027 lots in July to 329,790 lots, an increase of 9.1% on a YoY basis (August 2022: 302,306 lots).

Euronext FX


• Total trading volume of Euronext FX was $517,568 million for the month, up 5.1% compared to $492,227 million in July 2023 and up 14.4% compared to $452,344 million in August 2022.

• ​Average daily trading volume of Euronext FX totaled $22,503 million, down 4.0% compared to $23,439 million in last month and up 14.4% compared to $19,667 million in the same month of 2022.
