Euronext Sees 12.3% YoY Increase in FX Trading Volume for October 2023 Despite Fall in Cash and Derivates Markets

Euronext, the largest stock exchange in Europe, announced its monthly trading volume for October 2023, revealing a decline in overall trading performance compared to the year-ago period across its cash market and derivatives market. However, the Euronext FX experienced an increase of 12.3% in total trading volume for the month on a yearly basis.

Cash Market

• The number of transactions of the total cash market dropped by 17% from 62,825,968 contracts in October 2022 to 52,428,748 contracts for the month, an increase of 7% compared to 48,867,982 contracts in the prior month.

• Average daily trading volume of cash markets came in at 2,383,125 contracts, up 2% on a month-on-month (MoM) basis (September 2023: 2,327,047 contracts) and down 20% on a year-on-year (YoY) basis (October 2022: 2,991,713 contracts).

• Transaction value of the market for the period totaled €204,481 million, down 3% MoM (September 2023: €210,059 million) and down 1% YoY (October 2022: €206,753 million).

• Average daily value for the month amounted to €9,295 million, down 7% MoM (September 2023: €10,003 million) and down 6% YoY (October 2022: €9,845 million).

Derivatives Market

• Total trading volume of futures reached 4,988,352 lots, down 2.5% MoM (September 2023: 5,116,738 lots) and down 5.7% YoY (October 2022: 5,291,238 lots).

• Total trading volume of options reached 8,881,893 lots, down 7.3% MoM (September 2023: 9,586,354 lots) and up 0.6% YoY (October 2022: 8,824,644 lots).

• Average daily trading volume of futures for the month was 226,743 lots, down 6.9% MoM (September 2023: 243,654 lots) and down 10.0% YoY (October 2022: 251,964 lots).

• Average daily trading volume of options for the month was 403,722 lots, down 11.6% MoM (September 2023: 456,493 lots) and down 3.9% YoY (October 2022: 420,221 lots).

Euronext FX

• Trading volume of Euronext FX reached $507,790 million for the month, slightly increasing 0.9% compared to $503,013 million in the prior month and increasing 12.3% compared to $452,113 million in the same period of 2022.

• Average daily trading volume of Euronext FX was $23,081 million, 3.6% lower than $23,953 million in September 2023 and 7.2% higher than $21,529 million in last October.
