Euronext's May 2024 Trading Volume: Mixed Trends in MoM and YoY Performance Across Markets

Euronext, the leading stock exchange in Europe, has just published its trading volume report for May 2024, indicating a month-over-month (MoM) decline but a year-over-year (YoY) rise across multiple markets.

Trading Overview for May 2024

Cash Market

• The number of transactions of the total cash market amounted to 49,893,028 contracts for the month, down 7% MoM (April 2024: 53,767,122 contracts) and down 3% YoY (May 2023: 51,397,410 contracts).

• Average daily trading volume of cash markets came in at 2,267,865 contracts, 11% lower than 2,560,339 contracts in the prior month and 3% lower than 2,336,246 contracts in the year-ago month.

• Transaction value of cash market for the month was €232,128 million, basically unchanged MoM (April 2024: €232,489 million) and up 5% YoY (May 2023: €220,560 million).

• Average daily value for the month was €10,551 million, down 5% MoM (April 2024: €11,071 million) and up 5% YoY (May 2023: €10,025 million).

Derivatives Market

• Trading volume in the derivatives market totaled 14,299,357 lots for the period, an 1.7% growth compared to 14,064,556 lots in the previous month and a 15.0% growth compared to 12,431,741 lots in May 2023.

• Average daily trading volume of the market came in at 649,971 lots, a decrease of 3.0% compared to 669,741 lots in April of this year and an increase of 15.0% compared to 565,079 lots in May of last year.

• Total trading volume of futures was 5,781,787 lots, down 5.6% YoY (April 2024: 6,121,598 lots) and up 29.8% YoY (May 2023: 4,453,595 lots).

• Total trading volume of options was 8,517,570 lots, up 7.2% MoM (April 2024: 7,942,958 lots) and up 6.8% YoY (May 2023: 7,978,146 lots).

• Average daily trading volume of futures for the month came in at 262,809 lots, down 9.8% MoM (April 2024: 291,505 lots) and up 29.8% YoY (May 2023: 202,436 lots).

• Average daily trading volume of options for the month reached 387,162 lots, up 2.4% MoM (April 2024: 378,236 lots) and up 6.8% YoY (May 2023: 362,643 lots).

Euronext FX

• Trading volume of Euronext FX totaled $594,393 million for the month, a decrease of 5.8% compared to $630,803 million in April 2024 and an increase of 19.9% compared to $495,630 million in May 2023.

• Average daily trading volume of Euronext FX dropped 9.9% from $28,673 million in the prior month to $25,843 million, increasing 19.9% compared to $21,549 million in the same period of last year.
