FIA Releases Comprehensive Paper on Automated Trading Risk Controls

The Futures Industry Association (FIA), a leader in the development of best practices for mitigating risks in electronic trading, has released a new paper titled "Best Practices for Automated Trading Risk Controls and System Safeguards." This publication consolidates over 14 years of FIA's work in this area and provides an updated framework for managing various aspects of automated trading.
The paper covers critical areas such as pre-trade risk management, exchange volatility control mechanisms, post-trade analysis, and exchange-based conformance testing. These practices are designed to ensure the safety and integrity of financial markets, regardless of the technology in use. The tools and methodologies discussed in the paper have been developed through extensive collaboration among market participants and exchanges and have been proven to effectively manage the risks associated with automated trading, thereby limiting market disruptions and protecting market stability.
In the introduction to the paper, Walt Lukken, President and CEO of FIA, remarked, "As we reviewed our previous work in connection with the production of this paper, we were pleased to find that, as trading technologies have evolved over time, the risk mitigation tools used by market participants and exchanges continue to keep our markets operating effectively. Although the paper builds on more than a decade of work in this area, the practices it outlines are well suited to both existing technologies and evolving ones, such as Artificial Intelligence."
