Three self-styled financial influencers — Charles Hunter, Kayan Kalipha, and Luke Desmaris — have been charged in the UK with unlawfully promoting high-risk investment products through their social media platforms.

Appearing separately at Westminster Magistrates' Court, the individuals faced accusations of encouraging their followers to trade in contracts for difference (CFDs), a leveraged product widely regarded as high risk. Prosecutors allege that none of them held the required authorization to make such promotions.

The charges come under Section 21(1) of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000, which prohibits unauthorized persons from inviting or inducing others to engage in regulated investment activity. A conviction can carry a fine or a maximum prison sentence of two years.

The move by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) forms part of a broader international crackdown announced in June 2025. Regulators across multiple jurisdictions launched coordinated enforcement actions aimed at so-called "finfluencers," who use online followings to promote trading schemes.

All three defendants entered not guilty pleas. The case has been escalated to Southwark Crown Court, with a hearing scheduled for 8 October 2025. The proceedings are expected to test how UK financial regulation applies in the age of social media promotion, particularly as regulators worldwide tighten oversight of influencer-driven investment advertising.
