FINRA Launches Cybersecurity Portal Amid High Retail Investor Risk Exposure

The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority has launched a new portal aimed at improving coordination on cybersecurity and fraud threats across the securities industry, including risks affecting retail investors. The launch coincides with elevated retail investor exposure to scams, as earlier FINRA-backed research found 72% of social media users and about half of U.S. retail investors are open to risky investment opportunities.
The platform, called the Financial Intelligence Fusion Center, serves as a secure channel for member firms to share intelligence and coordinate responses. It will collect, analyze, and distribute information to help firms identify and respond to risks more swiftly. The initiative is part of broader efforts to support firms in addressing cyber and financial crime risks, incorporating input from government and private sector partners.
As a self-regulatory organization, FINRA works directly with member firms to oversee compliance, a position that enables it to facilitate industry-wide information sharing to mitigate risks. The FIFC was piloted last year with a group of firms of varying sizes, with participant feedback used to refine the system's functionality.
Firms are now encouraged to join the platform to access centralized intelligence and contribute to monitoring. The portal expands existing resources for member firms, including guidance on cybersecurity programs and emerging fraud schemes. Greg Ruppert, FINRA's Executive Vice President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer, stated the center will act as a "powerhouse" for intelligence sharing, calling timely coordination with firms "essential" for building resilience and protecting investors.
